GeForce GTX 880M vs GeForce RTX 3060

Intro

The GeForce GTX 880M has core clock speeds of 954 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce RTX 3060, which has a clock speed of 1320 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1875 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and uses a 8 nm design. It is comprised of 3584 SPUs, 112 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 880M 128000 MB/sec
Difference: 240640 (188%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 is a lot (about 21%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 880M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 880M 122112 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25728 (21%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 will be a lot (more or less 108%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce GTX 880M, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 880M 30528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 32832 (108%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
