Radeon RX 5600 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 5600 comes with core clock speeds of 1375 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which features GPU clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 4608 SPUs, 288 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should theoretically be much better than the Radeon RX 5600 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Difference: 229376 (78%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (about 199%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 5600. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 349600 (199%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 145600 (165%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
