Radeon R9 M365X vs Radeon RX 5500

Intro

The Radeon R9 M365X features a core clock speed of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500, which has GPU clock speed of 1670 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 Stream Processors, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5500 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M365X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 157376 (219%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 should be a lot (about 297%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 109960 (297%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 is superior to the Radeon R9 M365X, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 38640 (261%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
