GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this model. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 12 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 550 MHz, and 384 MB of GDDR3 memory set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 84 Watts
GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Difference: 21 Watts (25%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so theoretically they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

Both cards have exactly the same texel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at AF. (explain)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel fill rate, so in theory they should perform equally good at at AA, and be able to handle the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
