GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 features a GPU core speed of 772 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1002 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
Difference: 84 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5600 XT should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce GTX 580 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Difference: 151680 (79%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should be a lot (more or less 301%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 580. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 148592 (301%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 50944 (137%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
