Radeon HD 7770 vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7770 uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a speed of 1500 MHz on this specific card. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should theoretically perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7770 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 272064 (378%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT will be much (more or less 395%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7770. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 158000 (395%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 72000 (450%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
