GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5600, which has a clock speed of 1375 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also features a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 150 Watts
Difference: 90 Watts (150%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 5600 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GTX 965M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 230912 (361%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 is quite a bit (about 191%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115584 (191%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 57792 (191%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
