Radeon R7 360 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The Radeon R7 360 has core clock speeds of 1050 MHz on the GPU, and 1625 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 768 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1605 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R7 360 100 Watts
Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (125%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is 341% faster than the Radeon R7 360 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Radeon R7 360 104000 MB/sec
Difference: 354752 (341%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is quite a bit (more or less 410%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R7 360. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 360 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 206400 (410%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 360 16800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85920 (511%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
