Geforce GTX 670 vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The Geforce GTX 670 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 915 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this model. It features 1344 SPUs as well as 112 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700, which has GPU core speed of 1465 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Geforce GTX 670 170 Watts
Radeon RX 5700 180 Watts
Difference: 10 Watts (6%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5700 should theoretically be much better than the Geforce GTX 670 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 670 192000 MB/sec
Difference: 266752 (139%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 is a lot (more or less 106%) better at AF than the Geforce GTX 670. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 670 102480 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 108480 (106%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 will be quite a bit (approximately 220%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Geforce GTX 670, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 670 29280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 64480 (220%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
