GeForce GTX 950 vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950 comes with core speeds of 1024 MHz on the GPU, and 1652 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 768 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5700, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1465 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this particular card. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5700 should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce GTX 950 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
Difference: 353024 (334%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 will be quite a bit (approximately 329%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 950. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 161808 (329%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 will be quite a bit (approximately 186%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 950, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 60992 (186%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
