Radeon RX 5700 vs Radeon RX 580

Intro

The Radeon RX 5700 features core clock speeds of 1465 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 580, which features a core clock frequency of 1257 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It is made up of 2304 SPUs, 144 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 180 Watts
Radeon RX 580 185 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5700 should perform much faster than the Radeon RX 580 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
Radeon RX 580 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 196608 (75%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 will be a little bit (approximately 17%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 580. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 580 181008 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29952 (17%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 580 40224 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 53536 (133%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
