GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB features a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 768 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 96 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 590, which features core speeds of 1469 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 84 Watts
Radeon RX 590 175 Watts
Difference: 91 Watts (108%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 590 should be much faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 223744 (583%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 should be much (about 701%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 185136 (701%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 590 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 40408 (612%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
