GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 vs GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 has a GPU clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM runs at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which makes use of a 12 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1350 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this particular card. It features 4352 SPUs as well as 272 TAUs and 88 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 47 Watts
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 250 Watts
Difference: 203 Watts (432%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 630784 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 617984 (4828%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is quite a bit (about 4150%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 367200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 358560 (4150%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 118800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 114480 (2650%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
