GeForce RTX 2080 vs Radeon R9 M390X

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2080 makes use of a 12 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1515 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 2944 SPUs along with 184 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M390X, which has GPU clock speed of 723 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce RTX 2080 458752 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 298752 (187%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 should be a lot (approximately 201%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M390X. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 278760 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 186216 (201%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2080 is superior to the Radeon R9 M390X, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 96960 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 73824 (319%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
