Radeon HD 4750 vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon HD 4750 features a clock frequency of 730 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 550, which features clock speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
Radeon HD 4750 75 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (50%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 550 should be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4750 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4750 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 63488 (124%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 should be much (about 51%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4750. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4750 23360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11840 (51%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 should be quite a bit (more or less 51%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4750, and able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4750 11680 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5920 (51%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
