GeForce GTS 250 512MB vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB has a core clock speed of 738 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 65/55 nm design. It features 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 550, which uses a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this particular model. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 145 Watts
Difference: 95 Watts (190%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 550, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTS 250 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 44288 (63%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB will be quite a bit (approximately 34%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 512MB 47232 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12032 (34%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 550 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 11808 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5792 (49%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
