GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has a GPU core speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 550, which uses a 14 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this particular model. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 56 Watts (112%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 550 should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 56960 (99%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 is much (approximately 40%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10144 (40%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 550 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5072 (40%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
