Radeon R9 M385X vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon R9 M385X has a GPU core clock speed of 1100 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 896 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 550, which has a core clock speed of 1100 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It is comprised of 512 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 550 should in theory perform a small bit faster than the Radeon R9 M385X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 18688 (19%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M385X is quite a bit (approximately 75%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26400 (75%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at AA, and be capable of handling the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
