GeForce GTX 1050 vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1050 uses a 14 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1354 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 550, which features GPU clock speed of 1100 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 512 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 1050 6657 points
Radeon RX 550 3507 points
Difference: 3150 (90%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce GTX 1050 75 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (50%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1050 is quite a bit (more or less 54%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 54160 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18960 (54%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 1050 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 43328 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25728 (146%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
