GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs Radeon RX 470

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 850 MHz on this model. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 470, which features clock speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 70 Watts
Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (71%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 470 should in theory be quite a bit better than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 156800 (288%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 will be quite a bit (about 573%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 100928 (573%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 is much (about 573%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25232 (573%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
