Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon RX 470

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 has clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 470, which has GPU core speed of 926 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1650 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Difference: 59 Watts (97%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 470 should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 5670 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 147200 (230%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 should be a lot (about 665%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 103028 (665%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 23432 (378%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
