GeForce 920M vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M comes with clock speeds of 954 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which comes with core speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 470 4GB should be 1367% quicker than the GeForce 920M in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 196800 (1367%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB is a lot (approximately 288%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 88000 (288%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB is quite a bit (about 288%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce 920M, and should be able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22000 (288%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
