GeForce 940M vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce 940M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1072 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which has GPU clock speed of 926 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1650 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2048 Stream Processors, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should in theory be much faster than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 195200 (1220%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB will be much (more or less 361%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 92800 (361%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21056 (246%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
