GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB vs Radeon HD 4670 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB has a GPU clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 48 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, which comes with a clock speed of 750 MHz and a GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory frequency of 1100 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is made up of 320(64x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4670 1GB 70 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 90 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (29%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 22400 (64%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB is quite a bit (about 30%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 31200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7200 (30%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB is quite a bit (approximately 73%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4400 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.

hello,
i am very confused on buying a graphic card i was wondering about radeon hd 4670 but after seeing this comparison it shows that geforce 9600 gso is better than radeon hd 4670.
but still please tell me which one is better for playing games like gta 4 and many more..

GTA4 is one of few games that would actually benefit from the extra video RAM that the 4670 has, but it's a lot slower overall though... the 9600GSO would still be faster.

Depends on your budget I guess... there are cards that are much better than both of these.

Handy list for a quick overview of how various cards compare to the 9600 GSO.

I have a 9800GT and GTA4 runs fine as long as I keep the settings around medium. Same with newer games, can't run most of them on max, but they do run fine.
