Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 comes with a core clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is made up of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M395X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 723 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this card. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M395X should be much faster than the Radeon HD 4790 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X will be quite a bit (about 382%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 73344 (382%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M395X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13536 (141%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
