GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) has a GPU core clock speed of 790 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 144 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M395X, which features clock speeds of 723 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 106 Watts
Radeon R9 M395X 125 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (18%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M395X should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 64000 (67%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X should be much (about 388%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 73584 (388%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M395X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4176 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
