GeForce GT 430 (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M390X

Intro

The GeForce GT 430 (OEM) features a core clock speed of 700 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 96 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M390X, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 723 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2048 Stream Processors, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon R9 M390X 125 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (108%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M390X should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 430 (OEM) in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 430 (OEM) 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 131200 (456%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M390X will be a lot (more or less 726%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 430 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 430 (OEM) 11200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 81344 (726%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M390X is superior to the GeForce GT 430 (OEM), by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 430 (OEM) 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20336 (726%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
