Radeon R9 270 vs Radeon R9 M385X

Intro

The Radeon R9 270 features core speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1400 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1280 SPUs along with 80 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M385X, which comes with clock speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 270, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M385X in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 83200 (87%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 270 will be a bit (about 17%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M385X. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10400 (17%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 270 is much (more or less 64%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M385X, and should be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11200 (64%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
