GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB has core clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 640 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 20 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M380, which comes with clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M380 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 32640 (52%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be much (approximately 62%) better at AF than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15376 (62%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be a lot (about 56%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5740 (56%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
