Radeon R9 M275X vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon R9 M275X comes with a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M380, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M380 should be 33% faster than the Radeon R9 M275X overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M275X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (33%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is a small bit (about 11%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M275X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M275X 36000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4000 (11%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is a better choice, but only just. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M275X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
