GeForce 810M vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce 810M comes with a core clock frequency of 738 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 48 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M380, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M380 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 810M in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 81600 (567%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is a lot (more or less 578%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34096 (578%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13048 (442%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
