Radeon HD 6970 vs Radeon R9 M375

Intro

The Radeon HD 6970 comes with core clock speeds of 880 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375, which features a core clock frequency of 1015 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6970, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M375 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 176000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 140800 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 should be quite a bit (about 108%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M375. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 84480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M375 40600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43880 (108%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 will be quite a bit (about 73%) better at AA than the Radeon R9 M375, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 28160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M375 16240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11920 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
