GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 features a GPU core clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 256 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 700 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M370X, which has GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M370X should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (221%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X is a lot (more or less 270%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23360 (270%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M370X is superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8480 (196%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
