Radeon HD 4850 2GB vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4850 2GB has core clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 993 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR4 RAM. It features 800(160x5) SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M370X, which comes with GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M370X will be 13% faster than the Radeon HD 4850 2GB in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 63552 MB/sec
Difference: 8448 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X is a lot (about 28%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4850 2GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7000 (28%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M370X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2800 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
