GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has a GPU core speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 192 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which features a GPU core clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M370X should in theory be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 14272 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X should be a lot (about 28%) better at AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6944 (28%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M370X is superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 272 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
