Radeon R9 M275X vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M275X has clock speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this particular model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M275X will be just a bit (more or less 13%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 36000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M275X is superior to the Radeon R9 M370X, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (13%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
