Radeon HD 4550 256MB vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4550 256MB has a GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features core speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M365X should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon HD 4550 256MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 59200 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X is quite a bit (about 671%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4550 256MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32200 (671%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is superior to the Radeon HD 4550 256MB, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12400 (517%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
