GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB has clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 768 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 12 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 38400 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 22400 (140%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 will be a small bit (approximately 2%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 600 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M360 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (36%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
