Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 features a clock speed of 668 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 828 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M360, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1125 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 3690/3830 should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 10496 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 will be quite a bit (approximately 153%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16312 (153%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3690/3830 is a better choice, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1688 (19%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
