Radeon R7 M265 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon R7 M265 features a GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M360, which comes with core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M265 is 100% quicker than the Radeon R7 M360 in general, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 will be a lot (about 55%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9600 (55%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M360 is superior to the Radeon R7 M265, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (55%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
