Radeon R7 M360 vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon R7 M360 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1125 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which has a GPU core clock speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M265X should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 should be a bit (about 17%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4000 (17%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M265X is the winner, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
