GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 876 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features core speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 850M should in theory be much better than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M is a lot (more or less 30%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8040 (30%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 850M is superior to the Radeon R7 M360, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5016 (56%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
