GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M features core clock speeds of 797 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M360, which has a clock speed of 1125 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 860M should perform much faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be quite a bit (about 183%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 49512 (183%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 860M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3752 (42%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
