GeForce GTX 880M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GTX 880M comes with a GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1536 Stream Processors, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M360, which has GPU clock speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 880M should theoretically perform much faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 128000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 112000 (700%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 880M will be a lot (approximately 352%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 122112 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 95112 (352%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 880M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 30528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21528 (239%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
