GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB has core clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 640 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M330, which comes with GPU core speed of 1030 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 48960 (340%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB will be a little bit (more or less 20%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4024 (20%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2020 (25%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
