GeForce 9600 GT 512MB vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB features core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 64 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M330, which comes with GPU core speed of 1030 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB should theoretically be much better than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 43200 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB is a small bit (about 1%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 200 (1%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB is quite a bit (about 26%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M330, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2160 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
