Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 features a GPU core speed of 600 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 800 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M330, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1030 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4790 should be 611% quicker than the Radeon R5 M330 overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 88000 (611%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 is a small bit (about 7%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1400 (7%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 is a small bit (about 17%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R5 M330, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1360 (17%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
