Radeon HD 7950 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The Radeon HD 7950 comes with core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M330, which features a clock speed of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 7950 should be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 240000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 225600 (1567%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 is quite a bit (approximately 335%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 89600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 69000 (335%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 will be much (approximately 211%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon R5 M330, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17360 (211%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
