Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 250X

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 comes with a clock frequency of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 250X, which has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 250X should be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X will be quite a bit (about 94%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19400 (94%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 250X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7760 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
