GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs GeForce GTX 880M

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB features a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 192 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 880M, which comes with GPU core speed of 954 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1536 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

In theory, the GeForce GTX 880M is 122% faster than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 70272 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 880M is a lot (about 387%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 122112 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 97056 (387%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 880M is quite a bit (approximately 144%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 880M 30528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18000 (144%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
